- On July 24, 1983, at Yankee Stadium,
- George Brett hit a homer in the ninth
- inning to give the Royals the lead over
- the New York Yankees. Yankee
- manager Billy Martin showed GeorgeΓÇÖs
- bat to the umpires, saying it had too
- much pine tar on it (pine tar is a sticky
- substance used by hitters to grip the bat
- better). A rule states that pine tar canΓÇÖt be
- higher than 18 inches above the batΓÇÖs
- handle. The umpires agreed that
- George had too much pine tar on his bat
- and would not allow the homer.
